The COVID-19 pandemic has further opened up the legal space. More than ever, there is now so much competition and lawyers need to intentionally distinguish themselves. One sure way of doing this is with linguistic ability. Learning a foreign language and being proficient in that language makes a lawyer desirable to employers/clients, particularly those in the international space. But before you jump into the ocean of foreign languages, it is important to note that not all foreign languages are ranked the same. If you want to maximise your opportunities in 2020 and beyond, some of the best languages to learn are Arabic, French, German ,Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi and Spanish.
Now, let me share the top five reasons why you should learn a foreign language:
Recruiters have attributed the demand for multilingual lawyers to the globalization of the economy and the trend of law firms merging and expanding internationally, both of which mean lawyers increasingly have to communicate with international clients. No matter the practice area, there is a high demand for multilingual lawyers and it does not seem like this demand is diminishing anytime soon. Multilingual lawyers are required for tech-based transactions, project finance, international arbitration and corporate mergers and acquisitions.
Linguistics is one way to achieve leverage in the legal space. It is said that learning one language sets you in a corridor for life, two languages open every door along the way. Multilingual lawyers are currently “superhot candidates” and potential employers who might otherwise not consider a lawyer based on their grades or previous experience would take a second look based on multilingual capability alone.
Multilingual lawyers have better opportunity to earn higher income as they get to work on mostly international projects that pay in foreign currencies. They also have better and wider employment options, not only in legal firms but other ( international ) organizations that need the services of a legal practitioner.
Being a multilingual lawyer gives you an exponentially larger potential client base, and allows you to advise on business issues for a more geographically diverse set of clients. But language abilities don’t just help lawyers win foreign clients, they also help lawyers gain those clients’ trust. Clients hiring out of their jurisdiction want people who they can relate to and understand the pressures they are under; people who understand their culture and will do right by them.
Even if you do not want to practice law per se, you can just review documents and make some cash on the side. Documents review can be tedious, but depending on your circumstance, it can help to pay the bills.
So, before you decide to broaden your career horizon by studying for a second bar or getting a Master’s Degree , you may want to consider learning a foreign language first. But do remember that you have to be fluent in that language and your speaking and writings skills cannot be below par.
All the best, People!
